With just a week left of summer vacation, school budget cuts have forced officials to make drastic decisions.
During the Back-to-School Media Breakfast Monday morning, Broward County Superintendent said his schools will be working with a lot less this year, but he is very excited about the upcoming school year. "A quarter of a million children are going to come to school, wanting to learn, and I don't think there is anything more powerful than that." Among the changes in Broward County schools are fewer field trips and, in some cases, less teacher's aids. "Our backs are to the wall, they sincerely are, when you take a look at around the state and some of the chaos that's happening in some other districts," said the Superintendent, Jim Notter”. Despite all the budget cuts, Notter said children in Broward County would have the best education available. "We will die for our kids. We really will, and that's just something about a public educator. It's in our heart. It's in our soul," he said. Broward County is rated one of the top five urban districts in the country. "In case you didn't know, we're starting the first day of school as an 'A' district," said School Board member. Not far from Broward County other districts like Miami-Dade's school district continues to struggle to balance their $5.5 billion budget, which is $250 million less money than they received the year before. Hundreds of jobs have already been cut and more could be on the way. Miami-Dade district Superintendent Dr. Rudy Crew was reinstated recently. Beyond the loss of jobs, Miami-Dade plans to save by raising prices on school lunches this upcoming year. Parents will also have to buy supplies, which the district once paid for. "Teachers won't have the paper supplies that they use," said United Teachers of Dade President. They won't have the art materials that they like to use. They often won't have the computer technology, the programming that they want. They won't have books. Despite the cuts, school officials said they would do their best to make sure students get the best education. Classes in Miami-Dade and Broward County Public Schools begin on Aug. 18. Meanwhile children up north will return to Schools early September…COOL…OK
